Construction and effectiveness evaluation of cultural competence intervention program for nursing undergraduates

Abstract:

Objective To explore the path of integrating cultural competence intervention programs into Thinking and Communication course,and evaluate their effect in enhancing cross-cultural communication skills among nursing undergraduate students. Methods From September 2023 to January 2024,third-year nursing undergraduates who participated in the course of Thinking and Communication in a university of Anhui Province,were selected as the participants. Students were randomly divided into experimental group(n=68) and control group(n=71). The experimental group was intervened with the cultural competence intervention program,while the control group was undertaken the traditional teaching. The scores of cultural competence and communication competence were compared in two groups before and after intervention. Results The score of cultural competence in the experimental group and the control group was(69.19±6.28) and(66.21±5.72),respectively,after the intervention,which difference reached statistically significant(P<0.05). The score of communication competence in the experimental group and the control group was(90.82±9.25) and(86.37±9.13),respectively,and the difference was also statistically significant(P<0.05). Conclusion The cultural competence intervention based on Campinha-Bacote Cultural Competence Model can effectively improve nursing undergraduates’ cultural competence and communication competence.
