Abstract:

Objective To develop a practical, systematic and effective nursing training course to enhance nurses’ response ability to public health emergencies. Methods Development and application of the course was guided by the six-step approach and competency-oriented philosophy. Problems were identified through literature review and needs of learners were investigated. The learning objectives were confirmed by the competency index system through expert consultation. Then targeted teaching strategies were developed(66 hours for classroom teaching). The blended teaching was implemented. The teaching effects were assessed by the public health emergency knowledge survey, online course evaluation, offline case teaching and exercise evaluation. Results A total of 532 participants completed the training, and the score of 396 participants’ knowledge of public health emergencies was(3.92±0.71). The mean score of online course assessment was greater than or equal to 84.88. The highest and lowest scores were the psychological stress response and monitoring and reporting of public health emergencies. The overall course feedback was good, and the total mean score of items was(3.92±0.42). Thirty-nine trainers believed that cultivating teamwork and overall practical ability were well cultivated by case teaching and practice. The feedback mainly included long duration of online courses, lack of attraction, insufficient participation, insufficient sense of substitution, etc. Conclusion The nursing course on response to public health emergencies is developed based on six-step approach. The course meets the needs of public health emergency nurses and is effective to improve their emergency response ability. But the course needs to be further optimized.
