Abstract:

Objective To translate the Multidimensional Nursing Generations Questionnaire(MNGQ) into Chinese and assess its reliability and validity. Methods After obtaining authorization from the original author, the MNGQ got translated and back-translated according to the Brislin classic model. Following cross-cultural adjustments and a pre-survey, the Chinese version of the MNGQ was formed. From January to March 2023, 492 clinical registered nurses from seven tertiary comprehensive hospitals in Shandong Province were selected as research participants through convenience sampling. They were surveyed using a general information questionnaire and the Chinese version of the MNGQ and thirty nurses were invited for retest two weeks after the first survey to evaluate its reliability and validity. Results The Chinese version of the MNGQ consisted of six dimensions, namely conflicts between generations, patient safety view, relationships issues between generations, multi-generation teamwork, orientation to change and work propensity, with a total of 45 items. The Cronbach’s α coefficient index of the questionnaire was 0.943, and the test-retest reliability was 0.764. The item-level content validity index ranged from 0.80 to 1.00,and the scale-level content validity index was 0.91. Exploratory factor analysis extracted six common factors with a cumulative variance contribution rate of 64.977%. The results of confirmatory factor analysis showed good fit, with indicator of χ2/df=2.552, RMSEA=0.045, SRMR=0.046, CFI=0.934, TLI=0.929, and IFI=0.934. The average variance extracted(AVE) for each dimension was greater than 0.500,and the composite reliability(CR) values for each dimension were greater than 0.700. The square roots of the AVE for each dimension were greater than the correlation coefficients between that dimension and other dimensions. Conclusion The MNGQ exhibits good reliability and validity, which can be deemed as an important tool for understanding the perspectives and beliefs of nurses from different generations in China for assessing their characteristic differences.
