The status and influencing factors of attitude toward caring for dying patients in undergraduate nursing students

Abstract: Objective To investigate the status and influencing factors of attitude toward caring for dying patients in undergraduate nursing students,so as to provide evidence for the design of hospice care program. Methods Totally 324 undergraduate nursing students in a university in Fujian province were investigated with a self-designed general information questionnaire and the Frommelt Attitude Toward Care of Dying(FATCOD). Results The total score of attitude toward caring for dying patients in undergraduate nursing students was(110.90±17.14). Multiple linear regression analysis showed that gender,religion belief,hospice care training,place of birth could explain the total variance of 30.6% for taking care of dying patients. Conclusion Undergraduate nursing students show positive attitude toward caring for dying patients. Gender,religion belief,hospice care training and place of birth are influencing factors of attitude toward caring for dying patients. Nursing educators should provide nursing students with hospice care education in order to improve their attitude toward caring for dying patients.
