The mediating effect of empathy ability between ideological and political accomplishment and life meaning in nursing interns

Abstract:

Objective To explore the mediating effect of empathy ability between ideological and political accomplishment and life meaning in nursing interns. Methods A total of 627 nursing interns from a third-class A general hospital in Qingdao were selected by convenience sampling method. General situation questionnaire, Meaningful Life Measure, Ideological and Political Accomplishment Status Questionnaire and Jefferson Empathy Health Professional Scale were used to investigate. Results The scores of life meaning, ideological and political accomplishment, and empathy in nursing interns were(5.67±1.06), (4.19±0.74) and(4.79±1.20) respectively. Ideological and political accomplishment of nursing interns was positively correlated with life meaning and empathy ability(r=0.705, 0.405, P<0.001), and empathy ability was positively correlated with life meaning (r=0.608, P<0.001). Empathy ability had a mediating effect between ideological and political accomplishment and life meaning(0.155), accounting for 22.02% of the total effect. Conclusion Nursing interns’ life meaning is average. Ideological and political accomplishment can directly affect nursing interns’ life meaning, and can also indirectly affect it through empathy.
