Abstract:

Objective This scoping review aims to summarize available evidence related to the component of prebriefing in simulation-based experiences, the current-status of application and its impact on learning outcomes in nursing education. Methods Databases were searched from their time of establishment to October 27, 2022 for studies regarding prebriefing in simulation-based learning, including Wanfang,CNKI,VIP,SinoMed,Cochrane Library,PubMed,Web of Science, and Embase. Articles were screened according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the information in the articles was extracted and summarized. Results A total of 897 articles were retrieved, and 22 articles were finally included. The simulation-based learning was reported in the vast majority of literature and encompassed into three typical sessions, namely prebriefing, scenario or case and debriefing. Some literature identified the essential components and activities of prebriefing. Evidence supported the vital role of simulation educator in preparing simulation participants for a successful simulation-based learning experience. Evidence indicated that a significant improvement in outcome measures related to psychological safety and confidence levels. Prebriefing was helpful in reducing learners’ stress, optimizing skills and knowledge, and facilitating a reflective and constructive debriefing. Conclusion The results provide evidence for prebriefing practice in simulation-based nursing education. Moreover, results support nursing educators to get insight of the framework or standardization of this process, and pay more attention to the effectiveness of different strategies or approaches.
