The practice and effects of Narrative Nursing course for nursing undergraduates

Abstract:

Objective To explore the effects of Narrative Nursing course on narrative competence and caring ability of nursing undergraduates. Methods A total of 96 nursing undergraduates were included in this study. The course of Narrative Nursing was carried out from September to December 2019. The course had a total of 18 hours. Before and after the course,the Narrative Competence Scale and Caring Ability Inventory were used to measure the narrative competence and caring ability of students respectively. At the end of the course,the semi-structured interview was conducted to deeply understand students’ learning feelings and suggestions for the course. Results Scores of the ability to listen was higher than the score before the course(P<0.001). There was no statistical difference between the total scores of narrative competence,the ability to understand,reflect and reproduce(P>0.05). Scores of caring ability were higher than scores before the course(P<0.001). The results of the interview included students’ learning experience and students’ expectations for the course, and the former included the improvement of narrative nursing ability, the deepening of understanding of humanistic care, and the re-understanding of life. Conclusion Narrative Nursing can improve the caring ability and the ability to listen of nursing undergraduates. Future researches are needed on other aspects of narrative competence.
