A survey on the status of ego identity of nursing interns

Abstract: Objective To understand the status and problems of self-identity of nursing interns.Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted on 490 nursing interns in a hospital in Hunan Province using the ego-identity scale.Results At the beginning of clinical practice,the current self-investment dimension score was 20(18,23),the future self-investment dimension score was 20(18,23),and the past crisis dimension score was 16(14,19). There were 44(9.0%) students with identity achiever status,195(39.8%) with identity achiever—foreclosure status,48(9.8%)with foreclosure status,62(12.7%) with moratorium status,5(1.0%) with moratorium—identity diffusion status,and 136(27.8%)with identity diffusion status.Conclusion Most of the nursing interns have not reached the status of identity formation. Clinical nursing educators should help them carry out professional exploration,improve their understanding of nursing specialty,and establish correct professional outlook and values.
