Mediating effect of empathy between ethical sensitivity and prosocial behavior in higher vocational college nursing students

Abstract:

Objective To explore the mediating effect of empathy between ethical sensitivity and prosocial behavior in higher vocational college nursing students. Methods Through multistage sampling method,a total of 766 nursing students from two higher vocational colleges in Sichuan province were recruited from March to April 2022. The Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire-Revised Version into Chinese,the Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy-Nursing Student,and the Prosocial Tendencies Measure were employed for assessment. Results The scores of ethical sensitivity,empathy and prosocial behavior among participants were(40.31±6.64),(101.20±17.73) and(98.27±15.65),respectively. There were positive correlations among the three variables(P<0.001). The mediating effect of empathy between ethical sensitivity and prosocial behavior was 0.189,accounting for 32.75% of the total effect. Conclusion Empathy plays a partial mediating role empathy between ethical sensitivity and prosocial behavior in higher vocational college nursing students. Nursing educators can take effective measures to enhance the ethical sensitivity and empathy for higher vocational college nursing students.
