Abstract:

Objective To describe the methods and explore the effect of basic venous catheter maintenance training in primary nurses in Guangdong Province. Methods From 2018 to 2020,Intravenous Therapy Professional Committee of Guangdong Nursing Society has constructed a three-level linkage support structure of “provincial-city-local”,which integrated the teaching and training resources of static therapy specialty of municipal institutes and local hospitals. Training of venous catheter maintenance was carried out among 2 139 primary nurses in Guangdong Province. Before and after the training, the nurses who participated in the training were evaluated in theory and operation. After training, nurses’ satisfaction with training was investigated. The PICC-related complications and patients’ transportation costs were surveyed within one year after training. Results After training, the level of theoretical knowledge and operational skills of primary nurses improved compared with that before training(P<0.05),and more than 97% of the nurses were satisfied with training. One year after the training, the overall incidence of PICC-related complications reported by 12 county-level people’s hospitals decreased from 4.08% to 1.98%(χ2=9.206,P=0.002). The average transportation cost of primary patients with catheter to and from hospital for catheter maintenance decreased from(380.00±16.35) yuan to(180.00±10.18) yuan(t=214.479,P<0.001),and their satisfaction rate with maintenance service was above 95%. Conclusion The three-level linkage promoted PICC maintenance training for primary nurses, and improved the theory, operation level and clinical service level of primary nurses on PICC.
