The influence of non-violent communication on nurse-patient relationship in a psychiatric department

Abstract:

Objective To explore the effects of non-violent communication in the relationship between nurses and patients in a psychiatric department. Methods The nurses in a psychiatric ward were trained to use the non-violent communication skills. After the training,they were required to use the skills to communicate with patients. The outcomes evaluated included satisfaction level and complaint of patients. Results The overall satisfaction level of patients from June to December 2018(94.27±10.18) were higher than those from June to December 2017(89.32±9.73)(t=7.304,P<0.05). The patient complaint rate dropped from 6.63% to 2.55%(χ2=8.315,P<0.05). Conclusion The non-violent communication skills in the psychiatric department can effectively improve the satisfaction of patients,reduce the complaint rate.
