Abstract:

Objective To explore the effects of a situational simulation in the skill training of oral medication administration. Methods A total of 37 year-two nursing undergraduates of two classes in a university were recruited by convenience sampling. The situational simulation was used in the skill training of oral medication administration in Fundamentals of Nursing. Four cases were designed including anti-fever medicine for a patient with high body temperature, digoxin for a patient with nasal feeding, cough medicine for a child, and iron supplement for an anemia woman during puerperal period. Students were divided into several groups with 4 to 5 students in each group and each group completed a case. Teachers observed the medication administration process and gave their comments and corrected their problems. After class,a questionnaire was used to investigate students’ feedback on the simulation. Besides, students were invited to write down their learning experiences and opinions. Results The majority of students agreed that situational simulation was beneficial for their learning motivation(36/37),clinical skills(36/37),learning community(37/37),and theoretical knowledge(34/37). Students indicated that situational simulation could strengthen memory, cultivate empathy, strengthen cooperation, and arouse their interests. Conclusion The situational simulation teaching helps students better grasp the knowledge and skills of oral medication administration. The problems emerging in situational simulations also provide a basis for teaching reform.
