The mediating effects of social support and coping style between nurses' personality characteristics and mental health

Abstract: Objective To explore the mediating effects of perceived social support and coping style between nurses' personality characteristics and mental health. Methods A total of 1 589 nurses from tertiary general hospitals in Shandong Province were assessed with the general information questionnaire,Symptom Check List 90(SCL-90),Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ),Perceived Social Support Scale(PSSS),and Trait Coping Style Questionnaire(TCSQ). Results The score of the nurses' mental health was(159.75±55.22). The psychoticism,extroversion and neuroticism of personality characteristics,perceived social support,and the positive coping were the influencing factors of mental health,and those factors could explain 36.0% of total variance of mental health. Perceived social support and positive coping were the meditators between nurses' personality characteristics and mental health. Conclusion Nursing managers should promote nurses' mental health by improving the level of nurses' perceived social support and positive coping according to nurses' personality characteristics.
