The relationships among empathy,cultural intelligence and supportive communication in undergraduate nursing students

Abstract: Objective To investigate the levels of empathy,cultural intelligence,and supportive communication of undergraduate nursing students, and to analyze their relationships. Methods A total of 262 undergraduate nursing students in a medical university were selected by convenience sampling and they were investigated by the Jefferson Scale of Empathy-health professionals,Cultural Intelligence Scale,and Supportive Communication Scale. Results The total scores of empathy,cultural intelligence and supportive communication were (108.12±14.69),(89.45±14.16)and (70.62±7.42) respectively. Empathy has positive correlation with cultural intelligence and supportive communication(r=0.328 and r=0.345 respectively,P<0.05). The cultural intelligence has positive correlation with the suppor-tive communication (r=0.482,P<0.05). Cultural intelligence played a part of mediating role between empathy and supportive communication,accounting for 65.3% of the total effects. Conclusion The scores of empathy,cultural intelligence and supportive communication are at the middle level in undergraduate nursing students. Cultural intel-ligence has partial mediation effect between empathy and supportive communication.
