Introduction and implications of the construction methods of middle-range and situation-specific nursing theories out of China

Abstract:

The development of nursing theories has the value of nursing as an independent scientific discipline. Theory construction in nursing has been focused on the development of middle-range theories and situation-specific theories in recent years and these theories are closer to and have more practical guidance on nursing practice. Previous publications are limited to the discussion on the clarification and development of individual theory elements(such as concepts);there is a lack of an illustration on methods and contents of theory construction from a wholistic perspective. This article summarized the commonly used approaches for theory construction of middle-range and situation-specific nursing theories. Cases were introduced to illustrate the theory development. The aim of this review is to provide implications on the methodology of theory construction to nursing theorists in China.
