Abstract:

Objective To investigate the status and associated factors of willingness to care for people with mental illness among nursing undergraduates. Methods A questionnaire survey was conducted among 839 undergraduate nursing students in a school in Nanjing using self-designed assessment questions on the willingness of nursing service, assessment methods for the degree of contact with patients with mental illness, mental health knowledge questionnaires, and assessment scale for discriminatory mental illness patients. Results The total score of willingness to care was 5.26±1.91. According to the result of the multiple linear regression analysis, contact level and attitude towards psychiatric patients were the associated factors. The students who were more familiar with psychiatric patients, and had less stigmatizing attitude, had more willingness to care for people with mental illness, which can explain 15.9% of the total variation. Conclusion Willingness to care for people with mental illness among nursing undergraduates is not very strong. In the process of training students, comprehensive intervention measures should be adopted to effectively improve the willingness to care for people with mental illness among nursing undergraduates by increasing contact level and reducing stigmatizing attitude.
