Abstract:

Objective To integrate the qualitative research on the experience of children and adolescents with cancer returning to school,so as to assist oncology medical staff and stakeholders to understand the feelings and thoughts of children and adolescents with cancer returning to school, and develop beneficial psychosocial intervention programs. Methods Computer retrieval of qualitative research on the experience or feelings of children and adolescent cancer patients returning to school was undertaken in databases including CINAHL,Embase,PubMed,Scopus,The Cochrane Library,Web of Science,EBSCO,Wanfang,CNKI,and CBM. Relevant papers were retrieved from the establishment of the database to June 2023. The included literature was firstly evaluated by JBI Evidence-based Health Care Center qualitative research quality evaluation standard, and then the original results of the included studies were integrated by Meta-integration method. Results A total of five literatures were included,21 original research results were extracted, and three integration results were pooled. The first integration result referred to long-term coordination of academic and treatment conflicts, suffering difficulties and backwardness. The second integration involved managing disease and change, expecting understanding and support. The third result focused on going back to school brings benefits and patients start a new life. Conclusion Children and adolescent cancer patients who return to school perceive that cancer has caused multiple changes and influences, and it is difficult to coordinate learning and treatment, leading to poor school performance. While returning to school enables them to return to normal life and acquire many benefits, which should pay attention to the difficulty and particularity of patients in school. Active collaboration of schools, hospitals and families would promote the re-integration of children and adolescents with cancer into their school and social environment.
