Teaching practice of ideological and political theory education in the course of Introduction to Nursing

Abstract: Objective To design the ideological and political teaching in the course of Introduction to Nursing and explore its practical effect. Methods The ideological and political teaching of Introduction to Nursing was designed, and the main steps included setting the ideological and political goals of the course, exploring the ideological and political elements, integrating the course content with the ideological and political elements, and designing the characteristic teaching links of the ideological and political teaching of the course. A total of 162 first-year nursing undergraduates in Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine in 2022 were selected as the participants, and the ideological and political teaching of Introduction to Nursing was implemented. After the course, students were invited to evaluate their satisfaction with the course, the characteristic teaching links of the ideological and political teaching of the course, as well as beneficial or impressive characteristic teaching links of the ideological and political teaching of the course, and other related factors. Results The course satisfaction score of 162 students was(92.46±7.90). All students were satisfied with each characteristic teaching link of the ideological and political teaching of the course. Besides, 57.4%(93/162) of the students regarded that “teacher-student seminars” was the most beneficial or most impressive characteristic teaching link of the ideological and political teaching of the course. In addition, 89.5%(145/162), 81.5%(132/162), and 80.2%(130/162) of the students respectively rated that through the course, their professional values of nursing became clearer, with simulated sense of professional mission to fight for the nursing career. Also, their initiative in learning nursing professional courses got improved. The first section in the first chapter of this course was awarded as the demonstration project of ideological and political reform in Guangdong Province. Conclusion The ideological and political teaching of Introduction to Nursing is recognized by students and peers, which helps students to establish a clear nursing professional value, enhance their identification with the profession, and enhance their learning initiative.
