Chain-mediating effects of self-efficacy and professional identity between transition shock and career decision-making difficulties in undergraduate nursing interns
Objective To examine the mediating effects of self-efficacy and professional identity between transition shock and career decision-making difficulties among undergraduate nursing interns. Methods From December 2022 to March 2023，a total of 365 nursing undergraduate interns from 13 universities in Beijing，Shandong Province and Henan Province were selected by convenient sampling and investigated with the Transition Shock Scale for Undergraduate Nursing Students，General Self-efficacy Scale，Professional Identity Questionnaire for Nurse Students，and Career Decision-making Difficulties Questionnaire. Results The mean score of career decision-making difficulties was 37.85±9.37. Our study revealed that self-efficacy and professional identity played a mediating role between transition shock and career decision-making difficulties，including the independent mediating effect of self-efficacy（effect size=0.145），the independent mediating effect of professional identity（effect size=0.171），and the chain mediating effect of self-efficacy and professional identity（effect size=0.048）. Conclusion The transition shock of undergraduate nursing interns indirectly affects career decision-making difficulties through self-efficacy and career identity. Nursing educators should reduce graduate nursing interns’ transition shock and improve their self-efficacy and professional identity，so as to reduce career decision-making difficulties in undergraduate nursing interns.
