The current situation and its influencing factors of alexithymia in fresh nursing students in vocational colleges

Abstract

Objective To investigate the current situation and influencing factors of alexithymia among fresh nursing students. Methods A convenience sampling was utilized to recruit 450 fresh nursing students from a vocational college in Sichuan from March 2022 to April 2022. A package of questionnaires was used including the general information questionnaire，the Toronto Alexithymia Scale，and the Distress Disclosure Index. Results The score of alexithymia of fresh nursing students was（54.30±7.90），and the incidence was 23.8%. Multiple regression analysis showed that family type，left-behind experience，family economic status，experience as a student cadre，and self-disclosure level were the main influence factors to alexithymia and can explain 45.5% of the total variance. Conclusion The alexithymia of vocational fresh nursing students is at a moderately high level，and is related with family type，left-behind experience，family economic status，experience as a student cadre and self-disclosure level. Relevant school departments and educators should enhance the screening of new students’ alexithymia，and take positive measures to improve the students’ mental health to prevent the occurrence of alexithymia.
