Abstract

Objective To systematically review the concept, types and manifestations, influencing factors, and coping strategies of inappropriate sexual behaviors in older patients with dementia. Methods According to the research method of scope review,a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed,OVID,Embase,EBSCO,CINAHL,Web of Science Core Collection,PsyINFOP,Proquest and Scopus,CNKI,Wanfang, and CBM databases for studies on inappropriate sexual behaviors in older patients with dementia. Literature screening, data extraction, and summarization were performed. Results A total of 23 articles were included. The concept of inappropriate sexual behaviors in older patients with dementia defined by different researchers was diverse. The inappropriate sexual behaviors in older patients with dementia was usually divided into four categories:inappropriate sexual talk, inappropriate sexual behavior, latent sexual behavior, false accusation or abuse. It could also be divided into three categories:inappropriate sexual behavior with non-contact with others, inappropriate sexual behavior in contact with others, and verbal sexual behavior. Influencing factors included disease, psychological factors, social factors and medication. Coping strategies for inappropriate sexual behavior in older patients with dementia included assessing symptom and risk factors, improving institutional environment, providing corresponding interventions for inappropriate sexual behaviors, and strengthening the management and training of nursing staff. Conclusion The concept and classification of inappropriate sexual behavior in older patients with dementia has not been unified, and the definition of inappropriate sexual behavior in dementia patients in Chinese culture needs to be developed. In the future,it is necessary to continue to explore the coping strategies of inappropriate sexual behavior in older patients with dementia.
