A systematic review of the cognitive behavioral therapy on fear of disease progression in cancer patients

Abstract

Objective To systematically evaluate the effects of cognitive behavioral therapy on fear of disease progression in cancer patients. Methods The databases of PubMed,Web of Science,the Cochrane Library,Embase,CNKI,WanFang,VIP,and CBM were searched from their inception to May 2021. The randomized controlled trials of cognitive behavioral therapy to improve the fear of progression in cancer patients were retrieved. After article screening,quality evaluation,and data extraction,data were analyzed by using RevMan 5.3. Results Nine articles were included with a total sample size of 863. Meta analysis showed that the cognitive behavioral therapy reduced the level of fear of disease progression in cancer patients[MD=-3.06,95%CI（-3.50,-2.61）,Z=13.51,P<0.001]. The results of the subgroup analysis showed that the intervention with various evaluation tools and follow-up times was more effective in the test group than in the control group. Conclusion Cognitive behavioral therapy can reduce the level of the fear of disease progression in cancer patients. However,studies with high quality,large sample,and long follow-up periods are needed to further validate the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy.
