Abstract

Objective To investigate orthopedic nurses’ knowledge, attitude, practice(KAP) and their learning needs on postoperative delirium(POD) management. Methods A self-designed online questionnaire was used to measure nurses’ KAP on POD management in orthopedics departments of 11 tertiary hospitals in Sichuan Province. Results A total of 444 questionnaires were finally collected. The total score rate of the orthopedic nurses’ KAP of POD management was 72.67%,among which the score rates of knowledge, attitude and practice were 57.68%,80.85% and 82.48%,respectively. Univariate factor analysis showed that the POD management knowledge scores of orthopedic nurses with different professional titles were significantly different(P<0.05). And there were statistically significant differences in POD management knowledge, attitude, and practice scores in nurses with different hospital levels, different hospital properties, having working experience or not in the intensive care unit, caring for delirium patients or not, participating in delirium related training or not(P<0.05). Only 19.59% of orthopedic nurses had participated in the delirium-related training. The most urgent related learning needs were the diagnosis and identification, definition and classification, and risk factors of postoperative delirium. Conclusion Orthopedic nurses are lack of knowledge about POD,but their attitude and practice towards POD management are positive. Nursing managers should strengthen training on postoperative delirium for orthopedic nurses to improve nurses’ cognition of POD management and promote better clinical practice.
