Abstract:

Objective To explore the effects of a family participatory clown care in children with tumor during PICC catheterization and maintenance. Methods A convenience sampling was used to recruit children with tumor who were to be treated for PICC in the Henan Provincial People’s Hospital from December 2020 to February 2021 and these children were assigned to the control group. Another group of children from March to May 2021 was assigned to the interventional group. There were 60 children in each group. Children in the control group received the routine PICC catheterization process and care. Children in the interventional group received a family-participatory clown care model based on routine care. The pain level, catheter maintenance compliance, parental PICC knowledge and behavior, and satisfaction were compared between the two groups. Results The pain degree of catheterization in the interventional group was lower than that of the control group(P<0.05). The compliance of catheter maintenance, the level of parental PICC knowledge and behavior, and satisfaction level in the interventional group were higher than those in the control group(P<0.05). Conclusion The family-participatory clown care model can alleviate the pain of PICC catheterization in children, improve the compliance of catheter maintenance, increase parents’ PICC knowledge, belief and behavior, and their satisfaction level.
