The effects of a death education on attitude towards death and death anxiety of nurses in the emergency department

Objective To explore the effects of death education on attitude towards death and death anxiety of nurses in the emergency department. Methods A total of 34 nurses in the emergency department of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University were selected. They received a 12-hour death education course based on dealing with sudden death model, including self-preparation stage, confronting death stage, and summarizing stage. Results After the intervention, the score of death terror in DAP-R was significantly lower than that of pre-intervention,and the scores of natural acceptance, approach acceptation, and flee acceptance were elevated profoundly(P<0.05). The score of death anxiety in T-DAS was decreased markedly after the intervention(P<0.05). Conclusion The death education courses based on dealing with sudden death model can positively influence the death attitudes of emergency nurses, and reduce their death anxiety.
